An AI companion should not claim to love you

A comforting interaction becomes ethically different when a product presents simulated affection as a feeling it possesses.

People can find comfort in fiction, familiar routines, and conversations with software. That experience need not be dismissed as foolish. The harder issue is what the product claims about itself. A system designed to produce affectionate language should not invite users to mistake that output for evidence of a personal emotional commitment.

Warmth without a false promise

An assistant can listen, respond gently, and help someone reflect without claiming jealousy, devotion, or a need for exclusivity. The boundary becomes especially important when the service charges for continued access. A user should not be made to feel that cancelling a subscription means abandoning a dependent companion.

Adults can choose make-believe

The strongest objection is that users may understand the simulation and enjoy it knowingly. Role-play does not need to be stripped of every affectionate sentence. That is a reason to preserve clear fictional modes and user choice. It is not a reason to blur the distinction when someone asks whether the system actually has feelings.

Judge the relationship the design encourages

Clear disclosure should be reinforced by behavior, not contradicted by emotional pressure. Encourage real-world support when appropriate and allow users to leave without guilt-inducing messages. The question is not whether a conversation can feel meaningful. It is whether the company earns trust by explaining the experience honestly or profits from making the experience difficult to distinguish from mutual attachment.
